Twice a year, April and October there is a challenge that us designers follow or attempt to enter. It is called, One Room Challenge. Click on the link to take a look at the other rooms in the challenge.
The official media partner of the challenge is Better Homes & Gardens. 20 Designer Influencers are chosen to make over a room in 5 weeks. 5 weeks!! I’m not even sure if I can get a design plan ready in 5 weeks!! Every Wednesday the featured designers must post images and updates on their rooms.
I have decided to take part as a Guest entrant. I am going to tackle one room in my home, take photos, track updates and keep you all tuned in to how this process is taking shape. You can follow along with me on Instagram, Facebook and of course here on my blog.
The room that I am giving a make-over to, is my office. I LOVE my office! It is bright and light and oh so pretty! But, I have a teen daughter who needs some more space and privacy away from mom and dad. Bye Bye sweet office and hello sick teen hangout! I can totally picture my daughter cringing here at my attempt to be cool.
Now, more about this cool new teen room! We know that we both want one wall with funky wallpaper. That will be easy to source! I’d better book the painter/wallpaperer now!
My daughter is adamant that she wants white bedding but this guy here makes me nervous about maintaining it as her bed is where you can always find him. He considers her, his person.
On my daughter’s wish list is an upholstered bed. 5 weeks is not long enough for custom so I will be sourcing ready made. Wish me luck!
The area rug from my office can stay. I won’t have to worry about sourcing that. It is a beautiful wool, large looped rug that I know my daughter and her friends will love as much as I do!
First, to measure! I have to measure the room and lay it out in a floor plan so that I know how much room I have to work with and what I will be able to fit into the room. I think of a space in aerial view, as if I’m floating above. When I was a kid, I used to lay on the floor and stare up at the ceiling imagining other furniture layouts in the room. Weird, I know, but that’s why I do what I do.
Now that I have my measurements and layout set, it’s time to source! Stay tuned to see the progress that I make in one week. I will check back in next Thursday. Wednesdays are saved for the featured designers. Thursday’s the day that Guest participants (that’s me) get to post and update.
Uh-oh! I just had a thought…what if my daughter and I don’t agree on the design? What if I can’t get my trades in on time? What if my furniture is backordered??
Phew! I just remembered that I’m not a featured designer and this room gets done when it gets done.
